In these settings, Medical Technologist performs complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests. Examines and analyzes body fluids and cells and matches blood for transfusions. In addition to performing their technical function, medical technicians keep patient records and adjust and maintain equipment. They also may prepare work schedules, evaluate purchases of equipment, or manage a medical technical department. Duties: • Performs complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests. • Examines and analyzes body fluids and cells and matches blood for transfusions. • Must be familiar with the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) requirements for maintaining blood products for transfusion. • Analyzes chemical content of fluids and tests for drug levels in the blood. • Prepares specimens, counts cells, and looks for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids. • Analyzes test results and relays them to physicians. • Makes cultures of body fluid and tissue samples, to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms. • Analyzes samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determines concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels. • Evaluates test results, develops and modifies procedures, and establishes and monitors programs, to ensure the accuracy of tests. • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. • Orders and stocks supplies as needed and maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. • In addition to preparing patients and operating equipment, radiologic technologists and technicians keep patient records and adjust and maintain equipment. They also may prepare work schedules, evaluate purchases of equipment, or manage a radiology department. • Other duties and projects as assigned. Qualifications: • Must have completed a formal Medical Technology training program leading to a diploma, certificate or a bachelor’s degree. • Must be eligible or certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). • Must have and maintain current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). • A minimum of two years’ experience as a Medical Technologist is required. • All healthcare providers must have current clinical experience in direct patient care and have worked a minimum of 6 of the last 12 months in desired career field. • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills. • Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required. • Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities. • Strong problem-solving skills to research and resolve inquiries and respond in a timely manner. • All healthcare providers must have current clinical experience in direct patient care and have worked a minimum of 6 of the last 12 months in desired career field. Senior Medical Researcher Case Western Reserve University Akron Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, the Research Assistant 4 will coordinate major activities in medical and related technical areas. The research assistant will investigate the movement of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), oxygen (O 2 ), and nitrogen (N 2 ) through the plasma membrane, including through protein channels in the membrane. The research assistant will coordinate research projects studying the gas permeability of red blood cell (RBC) membranes. The research assistant will conduct experiments to isolate RBCs from blood collected from various mammalian species including mice, cows and humans. These will be used in stopped-flow experiments to determine O 2 or CO 2 permeability, Image Stream flow cytometry to determine size and shape, and measurements of the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen. The research assistant will make erythrocyte ghosts for proteomic and lipidomic mass spectrometry analyses. Other duties include generating physiological solutions, supporting laboratory staff and assisting with laboratory maintenance. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Coordinate major activities of laboratory/research to quantify the transmembrane flux CO 2 , or O 2 via aquaporins, Rhesus proteins, and other candidate gas channel proteins expressed in red blood cell membranes. (18%) Perform the most complex quantitative analytical procedures of a non-routine nature to: prepare and submit erythrocyte ghost samples for submission to Mass Spectrometry cores for proteomic and lipidomic analyses; and to quantify the size and shape of red blood cells from different species, or from different strains of mice using Image Stream Flow cytometry.
